Knight made his first sales of the new trainer from the back of his car at race meetings across Northwest USA. By 1969, his sales success allowed him to resign from his accountancy job, and he was now able to work full-time for Blue Ribbon Sports. The company started to grow, and a new name was suggested to fit with the plans for the brand. Nike is named after the Greek winged goddess of victory. Nike, the daughter of the giant Pallas was known by the Romans as Victoria, a name meaning victory. Knight revealed it was his friend Jeff Johnson, who suggested the name Nike for the company that was born in 1971. Other marketing costs were also kept low when a girl called Carolyn Davidson designed the famous swoosh logo for a paltry $35.
